This month in the Gallup Journey

In Our Own Backyard I was driving my truck down Highway 66 a few weeks ago when I was transported to another place by Johnny Cash’s voice blaring through the speakers above the diesel engine. Johnny’s “Long Black Veil” momentarily picked me up and dropped me thirty miles east of where I was and, for that short amount of time, I basked in sweet memories of a game called bucketball, cottonwood trees, campfires, greasy hair, flat tires, hiking boots, sunburn, and the smiling faces of some adorable young ladies that I wished more than anything were in the back of my vehicle giggling and gossiping. |

Did Bob Dylan Grow Up in Gallup? To the world beyond, Gallup is both mysterious and iconic. Outsiders are intrigued by us and can’t quite figure us out. Perhaps, one of the best examples of this point is the enigmatic account of singer Bob Dylan living in Gallup as a youngster.In the first known taped interview that Dylan gave to Billy James of CBS in the fall of 1961, he said: Dylan: Yeah, well I was in the carnival when I was about thirteen – all kinds of shows. James: Where’d you go? Dylan: All around the Midwest, uh, Gallup, New Mexico, Aptos, Texas, and then . . . lived in, Gallup, New Mexico and . . . James: How old were you?
