Adventures in Southeast Asia With gestures, I manage to order a strawberry milkshake. (Later I find out shakes are called sinhtos, but right now I don’t speak a word of Vietnamese.) As I’m waiting, another lady with two baskets on a carrying stick over her shoulder stops and points to her wares. The baguette-style breads look good, so I nod and she quickly proceeds to make me a sandwich with cold sliced pork, cucumbers and chili sauce. It goes remarkably well with a sweet strawberry sinhto. To pay, I open up my wallet and she pulls out a 10,000 Dong note, worth about 60 cents (one U.S. dollar = 16,000 Dong). |

The Revitalized Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Back in 1922, the small, dusty, Route 66 town of Gallup, New Mexico began hosting The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, an all-embracing, annual celebration of Native American culture and art. Throughout the years, visitors to the Gallup Ceremonial acknowledge that nowhere else on earth can you experience traditional tribal dances, a pow-wow contest, indoor and outdoor arts and crafts markets, all-Indian rodeos, a world class juried visual art exhibition, parades, Native American foods, crafts demonstrations, and opportunities to purchase authentic Native American art and jewelry, all in one location at one time. |
